Suriya’s box office difficulties continued with Etharkkum Thunindhavan, which had a terrible start at the box office, opening with an ordinary four-day extended weekend of just Rs. 31 crores in India. It also failed to create an impact overseas, with an opening weekend gross of over/under $1 million, resulting in a worldwide gross of around Rs. 39 crores.
The picture had a slow start on Thursday, and there was anticipation that because of the positive reviews, it would improve over the weekend, but that did not happen. Saturday’s rise was strong, but Sunday’s growth was not as strong as it could have been, especially given the previous trend of large Sunday jumps. In Tamil Nadu, it grossed around Rs. 23 crores, which has become fairly usual for Suriya films in recent years. The film’s opening day in Tamil Nadu was over 85% of a much smaller film called Maanaadu, while the 4-day number was around 82 percent. In the state, that picture grossed Rs. 51 crores, and if this one follows suit, it will gross approximately Rs. 38-40 crores.
Outside of Tamil Nadu, the film did poorly, grossing Rs. 4 crores in AP/TS, Rs. 1.50 crores in Karnataka, and Rs. 2.20 crores in Kerala. These are the kinds of numbers that a Suriya film should be able to achieve on its first day, and even that will be considered average. There was also a Hindi-dubbed version, however, the movie was a dismal flop with very few box office receipts.
At the Indian box office, Etharkkum Thunindhavan has raked in the following figures:
9.90 crores on Thursday
5 crores on Friday
7.50 crores on Saturday
8.60 crores on Sunday
Total – Rs. 31 crores
Suriya has had a difficult time at the box office for a long time, and this film did not help to turn the trend. The actor’s last box office success came in 2013, with the career-best Singam II, and his box office trajectory has been on the fall since then. With a large market beyond Tamil Nadu, he was formerly considered one of Kollywood’s top-tier stars, with Rajinikanth, Vijay, and Ajith. His films now barely make it into the top tens of the year.
