Mercedes plans exciting display for Auto Expo

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed its plans for the Auto Expo.

The German luxury carmaker will showcase a range of new models and technologies at the upcoming expo. Firstly, there will be the all-new Concept A-Class on display which will also be one of the first-examples of Mercedes’ new ‘fascinating’ design language. This concept aims towards a future range of compact cars from the Mercedes stable. The A-Class concept was earlier revealed at the Shanghai Auto show and is based on an all-new MFA platform. Mercedes will also showcase alternative fuel technologies such as ‘Fuel-Cell’ at the expo.

Another major highlight will be the launch of the SLS AMG roadster. This is essentially a drop-top version of the popular SLS AMG supercar already on sale in India.  The Mercedes stall will see as many as 10 cars on display that include the SLS AMG GT3 supercar as well as the C-Class DTM car.

Motorsport enthusiasts will also be able to get details on the soon-to-be-launched Mercedes-Benz-JPSI Performance Driving Academy which, according to Mercedes, is a first-of-its-kind platform for nurturing talent in India.

Tata Pixel

It appears that the Tata Pixel concept car, which was unveiled at the 81st Geneva Motor Show yesterday, will in all likelihood be launched in India as well.

Speaking of the sidelines of the Tata Pixel’s unveiling, Tata Group Chairman Rata Tata told Hindustan Times, “It may (be launched in India). But you must always remember this car is still at a concept stage.”

In fact, there is a chance that Pixel may even be developed as an electric car as hinted by Tata Motors CEO and MD Carl Forster. Initial reactions to the Tata Pixel were overwhelmingly positive, at least if we go by the comments received by us! The sceptical among us would say that concept cars like these almost never make it to production, but we can at least hope that the breathtakingly beautiful lines of the Tata Pixel would make their appearance on some variant of the Tata Nano in the future.

Tata Motors has a history of turning its concepts into production models, especially the ones it showcases at the Geneva Motor Show. Take, for example, the Tata Xover (pronounced Crossover), which the company had displayed at the 2005 Geneva show or the Tata Cliffrider unveiled at the 2006 show, which went on to be built as the Tata Aria in 2010. The Tata Elegante displayed at the Geneva Auto Show in 2007 also went into production as the Tata Indigo Manza sedan. Related: Tata Pixel photos and our earlier story on the Pixel launch at Geneva

Hence, there is a huge possibility that Tata might put the Pixel into production with an expected European launch around 2013. If and when launched in India, the Pixel will fill the gap in Tata’s Indian portfolio, between the Rs. 2.2 lakh (Nano’s top end) and Rs.3.8 lakh (Indica starting price) price bracket. However, Tata will first have to address concerns regarding the Nano’s safety to win back customer confidence before launching any new small car. Read related: Yet another Tata Nano catches fire!

The Pixel is based on the Nano, but is more stylish than the Nano Europa, the proposed small car for the European market. The 4-seater has gull-wing type two-doors that open upwards. Powered by a rear-mounted 1.2-litre diesel engine that could return a claimed 29.4 km/litre (3.4 litre per 100 km) as per European driving cycle, the Tata Pixel emits just 89 grams of CO2. Check out the Tata Pixel photo gallery for more pictures.

The Pixel is primarily aimed at the European market. To differentiate itself from numerous other small cars, Tata about the Pixel’s easy parking abilities. parking problem tactically. The car’s Zero Turn toroidal mechanism allows the rear wheel to move forward and the inner rear wheel to rotate backward. Besides, the system also reduces the Pixel’s turning radius to just 2.6 metres.

Honda City has emerged as the best-selling car in C+ segment now. Honda City is a marvelous sedan car which has ruled in its segment for more than a decade now. The first Honda City in India was launched back in 1998. Since then a lot of changes have been brought to the sedan on Indian soil. 2012 Honda City is the present model available in the country.

The Honda City sedan clocks major share of sales in India because of the Honda’s global vision of creating products that maximize the joy of customers, with speed, affordability and low CO2. In India Honda City has also been awarded as the “Car of the Year” in 2009. Its instant success is testified by the fact that the 3rd generation Honda City has sold nearly 1.36 lakh units since its launch in September 2008 and cumulatively 3.76 lakh units since its first launch in India in 1998. Honda City has 11th time achieved No.1 Rank in JD Power Initial Quality Survey in the mid size segment which is a record in itself.

The new Honda City is exceptional is all senses. It leaves the competitors far behind and spectators watch this new car in an awe. It still flaunts the legendary style but at the same time adapts to the need of the hour so as to provide elegance to the owners. There has to be a feeling of pride when you stand beside your car or when you get inside it. Honda City lets you feel that pride. The new car is specifically adorned with cosmetic changes in the exterior as well as interior front so that every Indian buyers do not loose variety in City sedan.

The arrow shot form in the design of this car makes it dissolve in the air while on run. Electric sunroof is the major and most attractive addition from the preceding model. Further the headlights of the vehicle are very sharp which adds to its compatibility. 2012 Honda City leaves no room of question as Honda has worked aggressively on the facial aspects of the car. The 2012 Honda City also receives Turn indicators on ORVMs (Outside Rear View Mirror). Carnelian Red Pearl and Sparkling Brown Metallic are the two body colors added in the wish list of 2012 Honda City, thus making a total of 6 colors.

The new Honda City is only cosmetic and no change has been done under its skin. The Honda City still comes equipped with a powerful 1.5L, 4 cylinder and 16 valves new generation i-VTEC engine that delivers a good balance of 118PS power along with excellent fuel economy of 16.8 km/l (Test results as per Rule 115 of CMVR). In line with the Honda’s policy of reducing impact on the environment the engine is E10 compliant and has Euro IV emission levels. Further the 5-speed manual and automatic (in select models) transmission with paddle shifts offers much more convenience in handling the car. Apple iMac

iMac

The new iMac features nearly twice the processing speed, advanced graphics and
ultra-fast Thunderbolt I/O. You don’t usually find something this fast and sleek on a desk.

New Intel Core i5 and i7 processors.

Up to 1.7x faster at the core.

New quad-core Intel Core i5 processors are standard on the new iMac. Choose a 21.5-inch iMac with a 2.5GHz or 2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i5. Or expand your view with a 27-inch iMac featuring a 2.7GHz or 3.1GHz quad-core Intel Core i5. You can even configure iMac with the fastest quad-core processor available — the Intel Core i7. All models use Intel’s recently refined chipsets. That means the new iMac performs nearly twice as fast as the previous generation,1 adding a new dimension of speed to everything you do. And since Mac OS X is designed to take advantage of each core, it captures every last bit of performance from the processor.

Turbo Boost 2.0.

Say you’re using a processor-intensive application like
Aperture 3 or Final Cut Pro that benefits from extra power. Turbo Boost 2.0 automatically increases the speed of the active cores — up to 3.8GHz. And by shifting core frequency in small increments, Turbo Boost allows the processor to manage performance without sacrificing efficiency. All this takes place behind the scenes, so your work (or play) goes smoother and faster.

Faster single-chip micro-architecture.

Watching a film, updating your blog, editing photos. Tasks like these require data to travel from place to place. The latest Intel Core architecture puts the processor, cache, memory controller and graphics engine on a single chip. Since data doesn’t have as far to travel, you get faster performance and greater efficiency.

Integrated memory controller.

With faster access to memory, each core gets straight to work on your data, rather than waiting for it to arrive. That’s why Intel Core architecture uses an integrated memory controller to connect fast 1333MHz memory directly to the processor. Together with up to 8MB of shared L3 cache, that helps your applications run at peak performance.

Advanced AMD Radeon HD graphics.

When you need performance for things like playing 3D games, editing HD video or running design software, the discrete AMD Radeon HD graphics in iMac go to work. You see more frames per second and experience better responsiveness. With the AMD Radeon HD 6970M, the top-of-the-line 27-inch iMac offers the best graphics of any all-in-one. But no matter which iMac you choose, you’re guaranteed superior graphics performance. With up to 2GB of dedicated GDDR5 video memory, these processors provide up to 3x faster performance than the previous generation.2

Thunderbolt.
Data transfer is now lightning fast.

Thunderbolt technology has arrived — and Apple computers are the first to have it. With one tiny port, you get lightning-fast transfer speeds and huge expansion capabilities. Two 10-Gbps data channels per port mean you can transfer data up to 12 times faster than with FireWire 800. And don’t worry about a single drive or peripheral tying up the Thunderbolt port: you can daisy-chain as many as six devices plus a display. The 27-inch iMac includes a second Thunderbolt port for even more expansion possibilities. Connect up to six more devices or a display or two.Learn more about Thunderbolt

Next-generation quad-core and dual-core Intel processors.
The 13-inch MacBook Pro now features a 2.4GHz Intel Core i5 processor or the fastest dual-core processor available — the 2.8GHz Intel Core i7. With Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.5GHz, these processors allow the 13-inch MacBook Pro to perform up to twice as fast as the previous generation.1

But we couldn’t leave fast alone. The new 15- and 17-inch models bring quad-core power to almost everything you do. The available 2.5GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor — with Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.6GHz and up to 8MB of shared L3 cache — enables these MacBook Pro models to run applications up to twice as fast as their top-of-the-line predecessors.2

App makers face holiday cutoff for Apple Store

NEW YORK: On Christmas morning, millions of people will unwrap new iPads, iPhones andiPod Touches – and immediately start downloading games and other applications for them. It is the biggest day of the year for app sales, which can mean big money for developers.
That is, if they manage to get their apps through Apple’s review process and into the App Store before everyone at Apple goes on vacation. Each year around Christmas, Apple stops accepting app submissions and updating its store for a while.

This year the shutdown starts on Thursday and runs for eight days. In the weeks leading up to the cutoff, developers often pull all-nighters so they can get their work to Apple in time. “There’s a mad scramble for developers,” said Marc Edwards, lead designer at Bjango, an Australian app maker.

“In terms of money, it can be a really big deal.” It is hard to begrudge Apple for wanting to give its employees a break. But the App Store freeze at Christmas, and the crunch time leading up to it, underscores Apple’s power in the world of mobile apps and the lengths developers are willing to go to meet its demands.

In short, Apple is a powerful gatekeeper, and for more than a week it is keeping the gate closed. “If you are a developer and want to sell an app for the iPhone, you have to go through Apple,” said Charles S Golvin, an analyst at Forrester Research who tracks the wireless industry. “That’s not true of Android or most other outlets,” he added.

“I can’t think of another company that has such a dominant lock on the channel to sell to an audience.” Android, the smartphone software made by Google, has the second-biggest app economy after Apple . And it does not have Apple’s stringent and sometimes inscrutable board of testers and reviewers, who can reject any app that, in their judgment, does not meet the company’s technical or content standards.

Android developers can sell their apps through a variety of third-party outlets like Amazon .com and GetJar, as well as the Google-run Android Marketplace, which is happy to accept new apps any day of the year.

But developers say that although Android phones are now bigger sellers than iPhones, it is still more lucrative to build apps for Apple products. The stakes are higher than ever this year because AT&T is no longer the only carrier in the United States selling the iPhone, so there are more potential customers.

Apple declined to comment on the App Store freeze. Bryan Duke, a part-time app developer inLas Vegas, has seen firsthand how much of a difference one day can make. One of his apps is an air hockey game that costs 99 cents and usually averages about 300 downloads a day.

But on Christmas Day last year there were 1,834. Apple keeps 30% of the revenue. “It’s typical to see a jump on any major holiday, but Christmas is the biggest one,” Duke said. “I’m certainly hoping for a nice big Christmas bump this year.” Flurry, a mobile analytics firm, estimated that from December 23 to 26 last year, 240 million applications were downloaded to Apple mobile devices, or about 20% of the total downloads for the month.

The promise of a Christmas bonanza was enough to motivate David Barnard, the founder of App Cubby, a developer in Austin, Texas, to jump into creating a notifications app, just days before the deadline. Barnard and his small team have built apps like Tweet Speaker, which readsTwitter messages aloud, and Mirror, which turns the iPhone screen into a mirror with the help of the front-facing camera.

“If we can get that snowball rolling and get it right, we can ride the momentum,” he said. “We’re going to give it a shot.” John Shahidi, CEO of RockLive, a mobile application developer in Los Angeles, said his company started working on a soccer game in August, with an eye toward Christmas.

“We needed the extra time as insurance to make sure that we are visible in the App Store and have time for any updates,” he said. Inevitably, though, there was a rush at the end. “I can’t tell you the last time I’ve slept eight hours,” he said.

Although Rock-Live’s app, called Heads Up, sailed through Apple’s review process and went on sale this month, Shahidi said he was keeping an eye out for any bugs or problems that might require a software update.

Microsoft takes on Apple, Android

Windows operating system, code named Mango, for mobile handsets has several familiar applications of a PC.

The smartphone market, which until now was majorly dominated by Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS, is making space for the new entrant — Microsoft’s Windows operating system (OS). Code named Mango, this new OS for mobile handsets comes powered with many familiar applications of the most popular operating system in the PC world.

And as the new Windows 7.5 OS devices appear in the market, users are now spoilt for choice. Aniket Barve, an engineer in BSNL has pre-booked a Nokia Lumia 800. He claims, “I have seen a few Windows 7.5 devices including HTC’s Radar, and Samsung’s Windows smartphones. None came close to how Nokia has bundled the software on its hardware.” Nokia which has partnered with Microsoft last week announced the launch of two smartphones — Lumia 710 and Lumia 800.

Nokia is already celebrating the successful launch of its latest Lumia series. “Around 79 per cent of consumers have given positive feedback on the handset during testing. We will be coming up with other smartphones on the platform,” confirms Prashanth Mani, general manager at Nokia India.

But Windows platform is not going to be restricted to Nokia alone. HTC too is said to be planning to widen its smartphone category based on Windows 7.5 OS. For now, HTC has just one model, HTC Radar that runs on windows 7.5. “We will focus on more phones in January March quarter, and provide a premium experience on the Windows platform,” says Faisal Siddiqui, country head of HTC in India.

According to StatCounter data, mobile OS market in India is presently dominated by Symbian OS with over 60 per cent market share. Android OS follows at about 4 per cent. Windows OS is estimated to have less than 1 per cent market share. “Slowly as more device makers are using the Windows platform, the volumes would become significant going ahead,” notes Naveen Mishra, lead analyst of telecoms practice at CyberMedia Research.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is doing its share to advertise its PC-handset synergies but might face some stiff competition in India. “The smartphone market is very competitive,” says Alok Shende, principal correspondent and co-founder of Ascentius Consulting. Shende classifies smartphone users into two categories – the innovators who for experiment with high-end phones, and others who go for feature phones which offer good value for money. Those with high aspirational value go for Apple and Galaxy, while there is a range of handsets from Sony Xperia, and Samsung on the Android platform for each of these categories. “There is tight competition in all these categories,” he says.

Users like Barve who have experienced Windows 7.5 OS point that Microsoft and Nokia need to build the application ecosystem. He says, “I have read that Windows Marketplace has around 40,000 applications whereas its competitor Apple has over five lakh applications on its app store. Even Android app store has over 3.5 lakh applications and a large number of them are free. Either Nokia or Microsoft need to think on how they can outdo the existing players with Windows apps.”

Well aware of users’ need to have a flourishing app store, Nokia and Microsoft are said to be working on increasing the number of localised applications that will give their devices an edge. “The application ecosystem is growing very fast. Nokia and Microsoft is working with thousands of developers to come up with locally relevant applications for India. In fact, at the time of launch Lumia devices will support close to 1000 apps that have been developed keeping Indian users in mind,” says Mani of Nokia.

Even experts claim that Windows 7.5 comes has certain advantages that extends PC experience to mobile phone users. For example, Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Outlook can be accessed conveniently on the handset, highlights Mani. “The new Windows OS also packs in latest Microsoft applications like Internet Explorer 9 that many PC users in India wouldn’t have experienced since millions of PC users in India continue to work on PCs with older version of Windows OS.”

The hurdle? Windows 7.5 is primarily meant for the smartphones and so the prices are on the higher end. Nokia Lumia 710 starts at around Rs 18,999 and the Lumia 800 costs Rs 29,999. Windows smartphones from other vendors like the Samsung Omnia W, too, cost about Rs 20,000 while HTC, known for premium smartphones, has one Windows 7.5 device that costs around Rs 24,000. On the other hand, Android, which has been embraced by many handset makers both Indian and Chinese, are as low as Rs 5,000.

Apple iTunes

Bottom line: Version 10.5.1 of iTunes brings a handful of enhancements to Apple’s ubiquitous media software, including iTunes Match, the cloud-based music-matching service that makes your music available on all your authorized devices.
Review:
As one of the most popular programs for managing music and video content on a personal computer, Apple’s iTunes software has become an indispensable part of our digital life.
Interface
The look and layout of iTunes 10 is essentially identical to that of iTunes 9, with just a couple of noticeable differences. The first is that Apple has updated its logo for iTunes. Rather than the old-school music note-over-CD icon, you’ll see a much more applike image. Still, the company hasn’t figured out how to more broadly represent the jukebox’s multimedia functionality: there’s still just a music note.
There’s also been a slight change to the source menu that runs as a column down the left side. The bright blue icons representing the various submenus have been changed to gray–an odd change in our eyes as it makes them stand out even less, which doesn’t make a ton of sense for menu options. That said, they still offer quick access to your media library, the iTunes Store, Genius features, and playlists. Once a selection is chosen in the source menu, all the relevant content spills out into the large main window, where it can be organized and sorted using an arsenal of sophisticated, spreadsheet-like options or switched into a Cover Flow view that hearkens back to the days of flipping through record crates.
Once you’re in the iTunes Store, navigation links now run horizontally across the top of the window and include drop-down menus to quickly drill down into specific sections, such as Jazz. Front page content is attractively arranged and allows you to launch music and video previews directly, without jumping in and out of specific album and video listings. There’s also an option menu next to every purchase button, allowing you to copy the item’s URL, add to your Wish List, gift the purchase, or share the link on Facebook or Twitter. We’re happy to see that Apple kept all these great enhancements from version 9.
As the primary tool for managing content on iOS devices, iTunes continues to make it easy to find music, apps, podcasts, videos, and more using the navigation buttons across the top. In the iTunes App Store, for example, you can view Apple’s New and Noteworthy apps, Hot apps of the moment, and Staff Picks if you’re looking for app ideas. The iTunes App Store also offers a number of features in the right navigation like Games of the Week, Games starter kits, most popular lists, and other rotating links for more app discovery choices. Similarly, the Podcast, Books, and Video sections all have options for content discovery making it easy to browse for new content for your iOS devices.
New in iTunes 10

Features
What started out as a basic jukebox program for ripping and burning CDs and transferring music to your iPod has evolved over the years into a multimedia behemoth capable of handling everything from HD-movie rentals to syncing appointments with your iOS device. In spite of all the bells and whistles that have been tacked on to iTunes over the years, at its core, iTunes still remains an excellent tool for managing your music and video collections.
One of the major feature additions in version 10 is Ping, a social music tool akin to Microsoft’s Zune Social. Ping lets you select your favorite artists to follow, and then provides updated information on new music and concerts in your area (as well as a Twitter-like feed of comments from the artists). In addition, you can connect with your friends through iTunes by sending e-mail invites or by linking to your Facebook account. Ping is also built into the iTunes app, allowing users to access it on the go. Ping started off slow at release with only a few artists to follow, but after a few iTunes updates, Ping blossomed into a full-fledged service. Ping still struggles to catch on, however, and is probably not as widely used as Apple might have hoped.
On the plus side, the latest version of the jukebox does carry over all the great features from its predecessor. There’s the iTunes LP media format, Home Sharing, Genius Mixes, and plentiful device-syncing options. The iTunes LP format treats music fans to a more immersive album experience, filled with liner notes, lyrics, interactive menus, and bonus videos. Though it seemed like a great idea when iTunes 10 first launched, relatively few artists currently have LP versions of their releases at the time of this update (iTunes 10.5.1).
On the video side, you can still expect to get the sort of bonus material and extras found on DVDs to many of the popular movies and TV shows available through iTunes. The format is called iTunes Extras, but just like iTunes LP, none of the added material or special menus can be transferred to an iPod or iPhone.
Apple’s Genius feature, added in iTunes 8, harnesses Apple’s vast collection of iTunes song data to give you educated recommendations when it comes to what music or videos may interest you based on the media you already have. The same data can also be used to create instant 25-song Genius Playlists, built around any song in your library. In iTunes 9, Apple added another use for its Genius song recommendations called Genius Mixes. To minimize the amount of time it takes to launch iTunes and start listening to great music, Genius Mixes are automatic mixes of music from your library based around a common genre, such as rock, classical, pop, or jazz. The effect is similar to switching on a good radio station, surrendering song selection over to Apple’s Genius technology, and trusting it not to mix your Zappa songs with Ella Fitzgerald.
iTunes also allows you to bless locally networked computers with Home Sharing privileges, allowing unrestricted access to their music, videos, podcasts, apps, and playlists, which can be copied between computers directly within iTunes. It’s a great feature for families or any multicomputer household, and can even be set up to transfer any new iTunes store purchases between all of your computers automatically. Of course, content added to your library using means other than the iTunes Store (heaven forbid) is excluded from automatic updates, but can still be transferred manually through Home Sharing.
iTunes Match

New in version 10.5.1, iTunes Match lets you subscribe to match your current music library up with iTunes’ vast music database and stores all your music in iCloud for $24.99 per year. Once subscribed, iTunes scans your library then matches up your songs with the iTunes database. Even if you have songs that aren’t in the iTunes database, they will be uploaded to iCloud allowing you to download them on authorized desktop computers and your iOS devices. It’s important to note, however, that Apple has implemented a hard cap of 25,000 songs for iTunes Match, so those with enormous music collections won’t even be able to sign up for the service. Hopefully Apple will come up with a way to account for users with giant music collections (even if that means offering the capability to designate which songs should be matched), but it seems like a large oversight to not have some way for these users to sign up.
Worth the download?
Updating iTunes is about as inevitable as death and taxes. Try to resist, and some iPod or iPhone update will come along and twist your arm into updating anyhow. And while Apple hasn’t done much to lighten the load of the iTunes installation package (or the bundled QuickTime install that comes with it), it’s hard to complain when the program is free and offers such an impressive range of features. If you’re willing to spend $24.99 a year, the iTunes matching service might be worth the download to get all your music available via the cloud (as long as you have 25,000 songs or fewer). So yes, it’s worth downloading–if for no other reason than to manage your devices and the content to go with it.
